Ashanti
Singer, Songwriter and Actress Ashanti was born on October 13th 1980. Her real name is Ashanti Shequoyia Douglas and she is famous for her fantastic singing career and her more recent break into the world of acting.
Ashanti was born in New York and accepted into University, but turned down a scholarship to focus on developing her acting and singing career. She has trained as a dancer and was first featured as a backing singer on rapper ‘Big Pun’s’ song ‘How we roll’. She also appeared on the soundtrack to popular 2001 film ‘The fast and the furious’ on a remake of Madonna’s ‘Justify my love’ by Vita. She has also worked with top selling artist Jennifer Lopez on ‘I’m Real’.
After the success of her collaborations, Ashanti had generated enough interest in herself to release her first single titled ‘Foolish’ it became a top 10 chart hit and she released her self titled first album ‘Ashanti’ in April 2002. It went straight in at number one in the billboard charts in the US and sold a massive 500,000 copies in its first week and has since gone 3 times platinum in the US.
Ashanti went on to release two more singles ‘Happy’ and ‘Baby’ and although they were not quite as successful as her first single they still managed to reach the top 10 in the billboard charts.
In 2003 Ashanti and singer Ja Rule sang together in the hit single ‘Mesmerize’ the music video to which was a parody of one the scenes from the hit musical ‘Grease’.
That same year Ashanti released her second album ‘Chapter II’ it went straight into the billboard chart at number one. She also released several brilliant top 10 singles from the album such as ‘Rain on me’ and ‘Rock Wit U’.
In 2004 Ashanti performed at the ‘VH1 Diva’s’ show alongside Jessica Simpson, Gladys Knight and many more, the show was a big success and definitely helped raise Ashanti’s profile even more.
However, in December 2004 when Ashanti released her third album it was no where near as successful as her previous work. She did however reach number 2 in the UK charts with ‘Only U’.
Ashanti has recently been developing her acting career and has so far appeared in films such as ‘Coach Carter’ alongside Samuel L Jackson ‘The Muppets wizard of Oz’ and the new hit film ‘John Tucker must die’. She has also filmed scenes for the new resident evil film ‘Resident Evil: Extinction’.
Ashanti is currently dating singer ‘Nelly’ the two have often been spotted out enjoying each others company at various locations and look to be very much in love.
Ashanti continues to expand her range of products and focus on her entertainment career.
