Shakira Biography

Shakira has a distinct voice and natural beauty to rival any of today’s pop stars. She has set both the Latin and European music scene on fire with her carefree attitude and unusual but powerful voice.

She was born Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripol on February 2nd 1977 in Barranquilla, Columbia. She started to write and perform her own music when she was just eight years old but was often cruelly taunted by friends who saw her as an attention seeker and often taunted her for the style of her voice.

However, by the age of 10 Shakira was transformed into a local celebrity, she went around the country winning talent and singing contests and was soon spotted by a Sony Music rep who signed her up, this was to be the starting point her pop career needed.

Hungry for fame and the chance to prove her skills she released "Pies Descalzos," which has sold almost 4 million copies worldwide, she went on to do her own local tour and refused to change her style when this was suggested by the record label, and remained adamant that she wanted to carry on with her unique and catchy style of Latin Pop Rock.

She later went on to release an even bigger hit in the form of "Donde Estan los Ladrones," showing the rocky and more edgy tones to her voice without losing her trademark sound.

In 2001 Shakira broke into the British pop scene when she began to write English versions of her songs which were made into the album that most of us have now heard of ‘Laundry Service’ it proved to be hugely popular and several hit singles ‘Whenever, Wherever’ and ‘Underneath Your Clothes’ reached high chart positions in America and the UK amongst others.

In September 2002 Shakira won the International Viewers Choice Award at the MTV Video music awards and In October of that year, she also won 5 MTV Video Music Awards Latin America for Best Female Artist, Best Pop Artist, Best Artist North (Region), Video of the Year, and Artist of the Year. She later went on to pick up another MTV award, this time for Best Female, beating big names such as Gwen Steffani of ‘No Doubt’ for this popular award.

As well as focusing on her pop career Shakira likes to concentrate on a charity she formed called The Pies Descalzos Foundation which helps to protect Columbian children from violence.

She has had several more hits over the past few months and has even collaborated with the likes of fellow music stars such as Wyclef Jean.
