Born in LA, California Tyra got her first modelling contract from Elite Modelling agency in 1991 and she later became hugely successful at this line of career. She was the first African American model to appear on the GQ sports illustrated swimsuit edition but she got her big break when she began working as a ‘Victoria’s Secret’ model.
In 1997 she won the highly regarded ‘Michael award for supermodel of the year’ and she had taken part in modelling shows all over the world including Paris, Milan and the US.
She has been featured in a huge variety of magazines, and her list of modelling credits is amazing having worked with everyone from Pepsi, to Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel and Ralph Laurent.
Tyra eventually decided that it was time for a change from the modelling world and after she began to find herself under pressure to lose weight to keep up with the ‘waif’ like trends that were in fashion at the time she openly stated that she was proud of her body the way it is and that she was not about to starve herself for anyone.
She soon began hosting her own TV how called ‘America’s Next Top Model’ that is produced, judged and hosted largely by her. The series was a big success and helped Tyra to establish herself in the industry.
She soon moved onto the world of Television and movies, hosting her own daytime talk show. ‘The Tyra Banks show’ has to be the highlight of this and gives her a huge amount of freedom to be herself and do the job she loves.
Her big movie break came in the hit film ‘Coyote Ugly’ in 2000 in which she played one of the girls who work and serve the drinks in the notorious ‘Coyote Ugly’ bar. She has also starred in the horror film ‘Halloween Resurrection’ and Disney’s ‘Life Size’ with Lindsay Lohan.
Tyra Banks has had relationships with various high flyers in the world of entertainment including director John Singleton and singer ‘Seal’ but now says that she just wants a relationship with a normal guy who is not in the media spotlight and knows how to appreciate natural curves when he sees them.
